How To Grow Tomatoes

How To Grow Tomatoes

You can't beat the taste of a fresh home grown tomato, nothing you can get in the supermarket can even compare to it.

If you have plenty of garden space you can grow tomatoes for canning, making sauces and to just eat fresh in salads or sandwiches.

If space is limited it is possible to grow tomatoes in pots, providing you with a fresh source of tomatoes for your enjoyment.

Whichever route you take rather it's in the garden in pots or even if you want grow upside down tomatoes you still need to do a little planning ahead of time.

Keep in mind that tomatoes need plenty of sunlight so you need a location that isn't in the shade all day.

There are two main types of tomatoes, determinate and indeterminate.

The determinate type will reach a certain height and stop growing which makes them ideal for container gardening, while the indeterminate types will continue to grow throughout the season sometimes to massive heights (as high as 15 feet).

It's usually the indeterminate types that have to potential to grow big tomatoes, although quite a few of the determinate tomatoes are a respectable size as well.

Once you have decided on what type of tomato to grow you can either grow tomatoes from seed or you can buy tomato sets from a local nursery.

Either way you will want to get the seeds or sets early. Wait too long to buy sets, and the healthy ones will be gone.

If you plan to grow your tomatoes from seed you will need to start them indoors at least 6 weeks before the last frost in your area.

You can save yourself the trouble of shopping for seed next year if you save tomato seeds from your best tomatoes out of this years crop.
